Link's Awakening How to Get to Desert and Reach the Dungeon

Navigating Koholint Island in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening often presents players with intricate puzzles and hidden pathways across varied terrains. Reaching the arid expanse of Yarna Desert and subsequently entering the fourth main dungeon, Angler's Tunnel, requires completing several specific story steps. Understanding these key objectives ensures a smooth transition from early-game exploration to mid-game challenges.
Finding the Hidden Route to Animal Village
To begin the journey toward the desert, players must first gain access to Animal Village located in the southeastern region of the island. The primary path is initially blocked by water, requiring players to locate a concealed underground tunnel hidden beneath a solitary bush. Cutting this bush reveals a staircase that leads through a cavern, emerging safely on the eastern bank.
Once across the river, heading south leads directly into the peaceful settlement populated entirely by talking animals. Visiting this village is essential because the direct eastern entrance to Yarna Desert is currently blocked by a giant sleeping walrus. Speaking with the local residents reveals that only a specific soothing song can wake the slumbering creature.
Locating Marin and Waking the Sleeping Walrus
Waking the walrus requires tracking down Marin, who has left Mabe Village to spend time by the ocean. Players should travel to the far southern shore of Toronbo Shores, where Marin can be found sitting on the beach looking out at the sea. After a short conversation, she agrees to accompany Link back to Animal Village to lend her vocal talents.
Escorting Marin back to the sleepy walrus triggers a charming cutscene where her singing awakens the beast. Startled by the melody, the walrus happily slides into the nearby water, permanently clearing the pathway. With the road unobstructed, players can finally step into the shifting sands of Yarna Desert.
Defeating Lanmola to Secure the Angler Key
Inside Yarna Desert, the main objective is to retrieve the Angler Key necessary to unlock the fourth dungeon. Navigating toward the northern section of the desert reveals a large quicksand pit where the mini-boss monster Lanmola resides. Players must defeat this segmented creature by striking its head repeatedly while avoiding its leaping attacks.
Upon defeating Lanmola, the monster drops the essential Angler Key directly onto the sand. It is important to grab the key before slipping down into the center of the quicksand pit, which leads to a subterranean cave. Inside this cave, using a bomb on the northern wall uncovers a hidden room containing a valuable Piece of Heart.
Unlocking and Entering Angler's Tunnel
With the key safely in hand, players must journey north to the mountainous region known as Tal Tal Heights. Traveling east along the base of the cliffs leads to a large keyhole structure built into the rock face directly beside a cascading waterfall. Inserting the Angler Key into the keyhole causes the rushing waterfall to drain away, revealing the entrance to Angler's Tunnel.
Although the entrance is now visible, reaching it requires climbing up the mountain paths above and dropping down from a higher ledge. Navigating through the cliffside caves allows players to position themselves directly above the newly opened doorway. Dropping down brings Link right to the threshold of the fourth dungeon, ready to face its aquatic trials.
